Legionnaires’ Outbreak: What About Your Cooling Towers?

Posted on July 18, 2012

You are sure to have heard in recent weeks of the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Edinburgh and that cooling towers or Air Handling Units (AHU) are said to be the possible culprit. Although this has not been confirmed and officials have claimed that the cause of the outbreak may never be confirmed, it is highly probable that cooling towers or AHU’s in poor condition are likely to be to blame. The importance of ensuring that your cooling towers are maintained to high standards has been highlighted and COVAC urge you to assess your cooling towers and invest in cooling tower repair to rectify/prevent any problems.

Legionnaires’ Update

Since the Legionnaires’ outbreak in Edinburgh, the number of confirmed and suspected cases has been steadily rising and sadly, the number of deaths is also rising. There has been a third death reported in the Edinburgh area. The number of confirmed cases on 9th July 2012 reached 49 while there are 50 suspected cases. The cause of this outbreak is thought to be cooling towers in the south of Edinburgh. There have been no further cases reported in other areas of the country; however, the outbreak has sparked a cry for all premises to review the condition of their cooling towers to prevent further outbreaks in the future.

Even with correct maintenance and water treatment the surfaces of cooling towers can become corroded, which makes cleaning very difficult and additionally, the corrosion provides an excellent food source and ideal breeding ground for the Legionella bacteria.
